Remembering Rev. Dr. Herman Hattaway

Rev. Dr. Herman Hattaway passed away at the age of 84 on March 31, 2023. For 34 years he was a professor of history and religious studies at the University of Missouri Kansas City. He was a Civil War historian and wrote several books about the Civil War including How the North Won: A Military History of the Civil War, Why the South Lost the Civil War, and Shades of Blue and Gray: An Introductory History of the Civil War. Dr. Hattaway was also a speaker at many Civil War Round Table meetings. Our Round Table presented Dr. Hattaway with the Harry S. Truman Award in 1986. He was a mentor to other Civil War historians including Dr. William Garrett Piston and Dr. Ethan Rafuse, two of our speakers this year. Dr. Hattaway was a credit to his profession and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
