Dr. Kahan earned a Ph.D. in U.S. history in 2009 from Temple University where he focused on Pennsylvania history and the history of U.S. diplomatic relations. Prior to that, Dr. Kahan earned an M.A. in Modern American History & Literature from Drew University and B.A.s in history and English (with minors in medieval/Renaissance studies and music) from Alfred University.
Since 2008, Dr. Kahan has published five books, including the definitive history of Philadelphia's infamous Eastern State Penitentiary and a well-regarded popular history of the Bank War. His most recent book titled: Amiable Scoundrel: Simon Cameron, Lincoln’s Scandalous Secretary of War, was published in 2016.
A Pennsylvania native, Dr. Kahan was born in Bucks County, grew up in Montgomery County, and now lives in Delaware County with his wife and three children. He is currently working on a narrative history of U.S. Grant's presidency.
